A magazine for those seeking an ideal place to retire is featuring the Black Hills on the cover of its most recent issue.
Where to Retire lists the Black Hills as an undiscovered haven in a seven-page spread. The story tells of three couples who moved to the Black Hills, and features one of the couples on its cover.
"The Black Hills are attracting retirees who are opting for soft adventure versus a sedentary retirement," the article states.
Amid descriptions of the area's wildlife and natural splendor, the article includes interviews with Pam and Rocky Darger, who moved to the Black Hills from California five years ago; Larry and Karen Miller, who moved to Spearfish from Pennsylvania; and Gary and Jo Jurgens of Arizona, who now live west of Rapid City and are featured on the magazine's cover.
The article takes special note of Rapid City, Deadwood, Spearfish and the Sturgis motorcycle rally.
Relatively low housing and property costs and the lack of a state income tax also are highlighted, and a one-page table describes the area's vital statistics and transportation, health care and housing options.
While the couples interviewed were very satisfied with their decision to retire to the area, the Dargers said their friends in California were surprised by the decision.
"When we told our friends in California that we were retiring to South Dakota, if we had told them we were going to purgatory, they would have been more understanding," said Rocky Darger. "But the scenery, fresh air and friendly people make the Black Hills the place for me."
