Nationally recognized artist to lead Dahl painting classes

Exhibiting artist Tom Loepp will lead a portrait workshop and a cityscape workshop at the Dahl Arts Center in July.

Loepp's career as a successful portrait painter includes commissioned portraits of Chief Justice William Rehnquist, chief executives of many corporations and many children, all of whom posed for their portraits.

His paintings are in the collections of the United States Supreme Court, the University of Chicago, Stanford Law School, Readers Digest, the Museum of the City of New York and other prominent institutions.

Portrait workshop

Work from a live model using your own media, acrylic, oil or watercolor. Participants will explore the different approaches to portraiture including the nuances of personality, looks and beauty.

Techniques in paint application, brushwork, light and capturing likenesses will be explored.

Capture vitality through alla prima methods to see results in one session. Easels available for use in class.

Cityscape painting

This class will meet in Art Alley in downtown Rapid City and begin with a demonstration by Loepp, taking the student through the process of creating a cityscape painting. Students will then disperse to nearby sites of their choice to begin work.

Loepp will visit students in turn and guide them on their paintings.

He will continue through the day to work on his painting and demonstrate further.

Pre-register at the Dahl and meet on the day of the class in Art Alley, weather permitting.

Art Alley is between Main and St. Joseph streets from Sixth to Seventh streets.

Bring your own easel and media of choice.
