An Ontario man suffered serious injuries Thursday after being struck by a vehicle near Piedmont after it traveled across the median.
According to a news release from the South Dakota Highway Patrol, a vehicle driven by Karen Knipple, 39, of Cumberland, Md., was traveling east on Interstate 90 between Tilford and Piedmont when it began to hydroplane. Knipple was unable to gain control of the vehicle, which traveled through the median into the westbound lanes of I-90, striking a motorcycle driven by Gary Page, 44, of Ontario.
Page, who was wearing a helment, suffered serious injuries. He was taken by ambulance to Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Knipple suffered only minior injuries.
About the same time as that accident, another Ontario motorcyclist was injured just east of Sturgis after colliding with a vehicle driven by a Vermillion man. Authorities say that Greg Hermana, 50, of Ontario was driving on 131st Ave. when a vehicle driven by Ben Bazemore, 25, of Vermillion pulled into the bike's path.
The two collided. Herman received non-life threatening injuries in the crash. He was not wearing a helmet.
