Black Hills towns schedule Veterans Day events

Black Hills area veterans will be honored Tuesday and Wednesday, Veterans Day, with a variety of activities including a parade, school programs and a presentation by two of the last living Pearl Harbor survivors.

Stan Lieberman and Steve Warren of Rapid City are two of a dwindling number of survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces on Dec. 7, 1941. The attack prompted the United States' entry into World War II.

Lieberman was in the Army Air Corps stationed at Wheeler Field north of Pearl Harbor when the Japanese planes attacked.

Warren was in the Navy serving on a boat anchored next to Hickam Field, where he helped tend to dying and wounded men during the attack.

Lieberman and Warren will speak about the attack, their military service and their civilian careers at an appearance at National American University on Tuesday. Their presentation begins at noon at the NAU Lecture Hall, 321 Kansas City St.

The public is invited to attend, and a light lunch will be served.

Also on Tuesday, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology will host an open house in honor of the university's veterans from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Student Organization Area in the lower level of the Surbeck Center.

The event will feature a retirement of the flag by the Reserve Officers' Training Corps at 1:30 p.m. and a veteran guest speaker at 3 p.m.

On Wednesday -- Veterans Day -- there will be a parade in downtown Rapid City at 11:01 a.m. after a moment of silence to honor fallen veterans. The parade starts at Fourth and Main streets, goes west to Seventh Street, south to St. Joseph Street and then back east to Fourth Street.

Parade marshal will be Col. Jeffrey Taliaferro, commander of the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base. More than 40 floats are scheduled.

After the parade, there will be a program at the VFW Post Home, at 420 Main St. Command Sgt. Major Larry Zimmerman of the South Dakota National Guard will be the main speaker. The public is invited.

Also at 4 p.m. that day, American Legion Post 22 will offer a turkey dinner free to paid-up Legion members at 818 E. St. Patrick St. Cost is $5 for non-members.

Also that day, the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps at Central High School will post the colors at 12:30 p.m. at Central.

Belle Fourche

On Wednesday, the Belle Fourche High School program will include announcement of the student council's selection of a second "Veteran of the Year." That program is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Belle Fourche Area Community Center.

At the high school program, local attorney and South Dakota National Guard Maj. Jim Seward will tell about his experience serving as an Army lawyer in Afghanistan.

Belle Fourche Middle School will host its program at 2 p.m.

Both programs include music and awards for student winners in patriotic writing and speaking contests.

Box Elder

American Legion Post 315, at 730 Briggs St., will host a soup and sandwich lunch at noon Wednesday. It is free for all veterans.

Deadwood

Area residents who were children in South Dakota during World War II will share their memories of the war years on Wednesday, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Adams Museum. The event is open to the public, and the venue is wheelchair accessible.

Ed Martley, a Rapid City author and Rapid City Journal copy editor, will talk about his new book, "War Kids: The Littlest Generation," which contains stories of 27 people who were children during the war. Martley and several of the other "war kids" will talk about their experiences.

Hot Springs

On Wednesday, the Hot Springs High School Student Council will host the Hot Springs Veterans Day program at Case Auditorium. Residents of the Michael J. Fitzmaurice South Dakota State Veterans Home will attend.

The State Vets Home will host an open house from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., featuring a craft and rummage sale and live music, including a performance by Miss South Dakota Morgan Peck.

At the Hot Springs VA, Veterans Day services will be held during regular church services on Sunday at the VA chapel.

Newell

On Wednesday, the Newell VFW Post 5807 and the NVN American Legion Post of Nisland will present their Veterans Day program at 8:15 a.m., at Austin Auditorium.

Oelrichs

At 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Oelrichs School Music Department will host a program in the school gym. The high school band, under the direction of Lynn Mason, will present "The Coast Guards" and "Promenade and Great Gate of Kiev" for the event.

Piedmont

Assemblies at both Piedmont and Stagebarn schools will feature speaker Jim Wranek, commander of Piedmont American Legion Post 311.

Spearfish

The Spearfish Arts Center will feature Black Hills State University professors James Knutson and Dave Wilson as speakers for the November Bellman Brown Bag Series, at noon Wednesday in Matthews Opera House. The professors will share their research on "War Cartoons."

Sturgis

Disabled American Veterans, Northern Hills Chapter No. 11, will host the annual Veterans Day program at the Sturgis Veterans Club, 868 Main St., beginning at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Speaker will be Jerry Lolley, Meade County Veteran Service Officer for the past 17 years.

The Northern Hills DAV and Auxiliary will host a chili feed immediately after the program.

Sturgis area veterans and family members will present Veterans Day programs at Sturgis area schools throughout the day. At Sturgis Brown High School, a schoolwide assembly will be held.

At the Fort Meade VA, Veterans Day services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Peace Chapel, Building 148.

Whitewood

On Tuesday, Whitewood School staff and students will volunteer their time at the annual Veterans Day PTO Soup and Pie Supper.

On Wednesday, the students will learn about flag etiquette from members of the high school JROTC, who will also demonstrate marching drills. Veterans will be guest speakers throughout the day in the classrooms.
