Names released of double fatalities in Friday's crash

Two Sisseton men were killed in a two vehicle crash that occurred at 1:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the intersection of South Dakota Highway 127 and 466th Avenue, about 2 miles east of New Effington, S.D, authorities said.

South Dakota Highway Patrol released the names of the fatalities as Richard W. Chell, 79, and passenger Winfield J. Thompson, 95, who were killed after the 1992 Toyota Pickup Chell was driving collided with a 1994 Jeep Cherokee. The jeep was driven by Nicholas Helgeson, 22, and passenger Matthew Helgeson, 15, both of Hankinson, N.D., who suffered no injuries or minor injuries respectively in the accident.

According to officers, Chell and Thompson were going eastbound on Highway 127 when the Helgeson Jeep going southbound on 466th Avenue collided with them. Chell was pronounced dead at the scene. Thompson was transported to Coteau Des Prairie Hospital in Sisseton before going on to Fargo Merit Care Hospital at Fargo, N.D., where he died.

Alcohol is not a factor in the accident. Chell was the only one wearing his seatbelt.

Assisting agencies at the crash site include Roberts County Sheriff's Office, Rosholt Police Department, Roberts County Rescue and Northeast Ambulance. Alcohol is not a factor. The crash is still under investigation.
