The daily commitment Oglala Sioux Tribe law enforcement officers make to public safety will be recognized with an honoring and blessing ceremony, beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at Prairie Wind Casino’s Lakota Dome.
Everett Little Whiteman, head of the tribe’s Department of Public Safety, said this is the first such ceremony for his officers; he expects about 45 officers to participate.
“The blessing is for the protection of each police officer and to encourage the officer to recognize the serious responsibility of their position,” Little Whiteman said.
Lakota spiritual leader Wilmer Mesteth will conduct the blessing ceremony. Officers will receive an eagle feather to bless them and as a symbol of protection for their homes.
“A lot of people on the Pine Ridge Reservation want a good, safe community,” Little Whiteman said.
