JUST HAD TO ASK: Mary Corbine, executive director, Working Against Violence, Inc.

THE QUESTION: WAVI just finished a month-long event to recognize and honor the people who make the organization work. Who are the people that make Working Against Violence, Inc, (WAVI) work?

So many individuals and agencies coordinate their efforts to provide quality services to those in need, that it would be impossible to list everyone. Community partnerships, volunteers, and a dedicated staff are at the core of WAVI's existence.

WAVI has been providing services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Rapid City since 1978.

Over the years, WAVI has created vital partnerships that enhance the safety and services to victims of domestic violence in our area.

One of those partnerships is with local law enforcement. It is an honor to work side by side with the Rapid City Police Department and the Pennington County Sheriff's Office.

By having officers and deputies educated on the dynamics of domestic violence and dedicated to working with the victims, safety and vital services are streamlined.

Agencies such as the Pennington County States Attorney's Office, Victim's Assistance, Court Services, Clerk of Courts and our local judges, work with WAVI and local law enforcement to insure that the safety and legal rights of victims are addressed.

These unique partnerships are a part of a coordinated community response to domestic violence incidents; by having this coordinated effort, more offenders are held accountable and prosecution rates are increased.

Victims of domestic violence are not the only individuals who receive specialized services from WAVI; we also provide services to victims of sexual assault.

Trained WAVI volunteers and staff, respond to the emergency room to provide emotional support during rape exams, offer safety, and help the victim communicate with hospital staff and law enforcement. WAVI offers immediate services that may be necessary, such as clothing and shoes to wear home, since the victims items are often kept for evidence. These services do not stop in the emergency room; this is where they begin.

The nature of collecting evidence through a rape kit is very intrusive. A coordinated effort with the Sexual Assault Response Team at Rapid City Regional Hospital and WAVI staff and volunteers helps the victims and their loved ones through this very emotional process.

The community of Rapid City has been very supportive to WAVI over the years, providing necessary donations of food, clothing, and monetary support.

Without this generous support, WAVI would not be able to provide the numerous basic needs to our many clients. Along with the tremendous support of the community, WAVI is fortunate to have a dedicated board of directors, staff and volunteers. Without that support, WAVI could not continue to provide quality, comprehensive services to our clients or hold fast to long-standing partnerships.

This dedication and commitment to serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault are like no other and for that, we thank you.
