Stealth bomber and WWII-era bomber to make appearance
ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE - A B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and a B-25 Mitchell medium bomber from World War II are both scheduled to fly over Ellsworth Air Force Base at the base's open house Saturday, June 23.
The B-2 Spirit, considered America's premiere stealth bomber, will fly over Ellsworth about 2:15 p.m.
The B-2 is a multi-role aircraft that can deliver conventional and nuclear weapons, the prepared release said. The craft is usually used to penetrate "intricate enemy air defenses" and strike valuable military targets, according to the release.
The aircraft can go 6,000 nautical miles without refueling. It was used in its first deployment overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, in which the bomber flew from a forward operating location and released more than 1.5 million pounds of munitions on enemy combatants, according to the news release.
The other flyover scheduled features an aircraft used in World War II. The B-25 Mitchell flew the famous "Doolittle Raid" over Tokyo in 1942.
"This aircraft is rooted in history and, in particular, the history of Ellsworth," Maj. Jonathan Creer, 28th Bomb Wing director of staff, said. "The aviators in the 28th Operations Group here still call themselves 'Doolittle's Raiders.'"
The "Doolittle Raid" was a surprise attack executed by sixteen B-25s. It "struck a blow at Japan in direct reprisal for the attack on Pearl Harbor," the news release said.
The main gate of Ellsworth Air Force Base, which is accessible through the Air and Space Museum using Exit 66 westbound from Interstate 90 or Exit 67B for eastbound traffic, will open for open-house visitors at 9 a.m. June 23.
