The board of directors of the John T. Vucurevich Foundation recently awarded nearly $965,000 in grants at their February meeting.
Among the recipients are:
Aberdeen Area Tribal Chairmen's Health Board, Rapid City - $24,000 for medical-records equipment supporting the Healthy Start Program, which provides high-risk pregnant women and infants on South Dakota reservations with individual case management, including home visits.
Adams Museum & House, Deadwood - $250,000 towards the completion of the new Homestake-Adams Research & Cultural Center, which will archive the Homestake Mining Co. collection. The Homestake-Adams Research & Cultural Center will provide public access to this collection, which details the Homestake Mining Co.'s 126-year history, allowing natural history, science and cultural programming.
Black Hills Workshop & Training Center, Rapid City - $100,000 for start-up costs related to staff, furnishings and equipment for the new Community Transitions Head Trauma facility and program.
Community Food Banks of South Dakota, Rapid City - $50,000 to assist the Food Pantry in obtaining more food in Rapid City because of rising transportation costs.
Community Health Center of the Black Hills, Rapid City - $35,000 for a capital/building project-planning grant to help meet the health-service needs of the underserved in the community by increasing their capacity, providing a One Stop Health Care Center, and the establishment of a children's health clinic at General Beadle School in Rapid City.
Oglala Lakota College, Kyle - $24,000 in scholarship funding for nursing students for the 2008-09 school year.
Rapid City Area School District - $154,197, for start-up staffing and equipment at the new General Beadle School and Community Center.
Rushmore Music Camp, Keystone - $1,500 for scholarships to students attending summer music camp.
Salvation Army, Rapid City - $50,000, providing 2,817 food baskets for families during Christmas.
South Dakota School of Mines & Technology - $30,000 in scholarship support for Native American students and $30,000 for South Dakota students for the 2008-09 school year for science, technology, engineering and math degrees.
Working Against Violence, Inc., Rapid City - $98,000 for domestic-violence and sexual-assault programs, Children's Advocacy Program, Project SAFE (Security, Advocacy and Family Empowerment, which provides case management, and a 1-1 matching grant up to $100,000 for their facility debt retirement.
YMCA South Dakota General Convention, Dupree - $18,215 for Director of Entrepreneurship, which will establish an economic link between the Sioux YMCA Arts & Crafts Project, the "outside" world and artisans of the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation.
