A hearing to suppress evidence has been scheduled in the case of three men accused of holding a 19-year-old man against his will, beating him with a dumbbell and strangling him with a video game cord.

Raymond S. Janis, 24, of Pine Ridge and James D. Lawrence, 21, and Grant W. Dillon, 27, both of Rapid City, are scheduled for a suppression hearing at 9:30 a.m. May 9.

The hearing was scheduled by 7th Circuit Judge John Delaney on Monday afternoon.

The men have each been charged with one count of second-degree kidnapping and one count of aggravated assault. Each count carries up to 15 years in prison.

Attorneys on both sides agreed to wait until the suppression hearing to discuss any further motions that have been in the works.

Rapid City attorney Angela Colbath, who is defending the three men, is seeking to suppress evidence collected by the state against the defendants.

Pennington County deputy state's attorney Kevin Krull said Monday he is not sure what evidence Colbath is seeking to suppress.

He said the state has agreed not to use as evidence any statements made by the co-defendants about each other. The defendants would have to be tried separately if any such statements were to be used, Krull said.

Kristopher Goodman, 19, entered the men's motel room late Feb. 28, of his own will but was held there, beaten with a 25-pound dumbbell and strangled with a video-game system power cord, police reports said.

Goodman was treated for his injuries and released from Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Janis, Lawrence and Dillon are in custody at the Pennington County Jail.
