A cell phone text message regarding a "Visa check" being deactivated is a scam, according to the Pennington County Sheriff's Office.
Lt. Marty Graves said the text message being received by area residents is from ciumegu9@b.tmsg8.com and claims to come from Black Hills Federal Credit Union. The sender is asking people to provide credit card information to reactivate the check.
"Do not call the number provided in the message for verification. Never release personal or bank account information to an unknown person," Graves urged in a news release.
Sheriff's investigators are working with the credit union to determine the origin of the text message.
