Historic preservation meeting planned
RAPID CITY - Local residents with an interest in historic preservation are invited to a meeting Saturday, Sept. 22, to talk about creating a new historic preservation organization in Rapid City.
The session will begin at 3 p.m. in Meeting Room B, upstairs at the Rapid City Public Library.
Organizers say they want to explore creating a group that will focus on saving Rapid City's historic built environment - architecture and buildings - by taking an approach based on education and advocacy.
"These efforts will enable the community to more fully understand, appreciate and support the preservation of our unique heritage as evidenced in one of our most tangible and easily recognizable historic resources," organizers wrote in a press release.
Group members hope to use nationwide preservation standards as well as ideas from groups such as the Main Street Program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Smart Growth Network, and the Congress for the New Urbanism.
Among the organizers are Adrienne Merola Kerst and Jean Oleson Kessloff, both members of the Rapid City Historic Preservation Commission.
