The Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department at Ellsworth Air Force Base is scheduled to hold training burns Saturday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Training burns are conducted regularly to ensure Ellsworth firefighters maintain readiness and meet Federal Aviation Administration annual training requirements. Community members and Ellsworth personnel can expect to see heavy black smoke coming from Ellsworth during the training burns.
"Ellsworth conducts numerous aircraft training fires throughout the spring and summer months," David Olson, 28th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire and Emergency Services chief, said. "Ellsworth is fortunate enough to have the only jet-fuel training facility in the upper Midwest. As a result, we train various military and civilian airport firefighters throughout South Dakota and several surrounding states."
