Community development: Nonprofit groups won't take a big hit.
Rapid City will receive $496,179 in its annual Community Development Block Grant allocation, according to Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D.
"That's a little bit less money than we anticipated," city community development specialist Barb Garcia said Friday. "From what we've allocated, we will have to reduce some of the funds. … No one will take a big hit."
She said the city's affordable housing initiative will be somewhat reduced, as will funding to administer the block grant funds. That will shield as much as possible the nonprofit organizations that receive funding to help the elderly, disabled and those in low to very low income brackets.
Local groups receiving reimbursement for expenses - a lump sum check is not issued in advance - include Behavior Management, Club for Boys, Community Health Center, Dakota Legal Services, 211 Help Line, Salvation Army, WAVI, Youth & Family Services, Habitat for Humanity, Rapid City Community Development, Teton Coalition and Western Resources for Disabled Independents.
The city earlier received $132,734 in block grant funds in the separately funded federal economic stimulus package.
