Six people seeking to serve the remainder of former Alderman Bob Hurlbut's unexpired term on the Rapid City Council met Friday's deadline to be included on the Nov. 4 Ward 5 special election ballot.

Candidates are Aaron Costello, Ty Ferley, Lillian Letner, John M. Lundeen, Christopher Self and Peter Schmid.

Letner, 39, a mother of two, holds a bachelor's degree in political science and philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh and a master's degree in health care administration from Trinity University. In the past, she worked as a health care executive in a variety of locations but currently works for her husband, James, who is a local real estate developer.

Christopher Self, 27, is a full-time student at National American University studying international business and pre-law.

Lundeen, 23, is a full-time political science major at Black Hills State University.

Schmid, 31, is an insurance agent.

Costello, 29, is a mechanical engineer. Information about Ferley was not available.

The winner of the special election will serve on the council through July 6, 2009.

If no candidate earns 50 percent of the vote on Nov. 4, a runoff between the top two vote-getters will be held Nov. 25.

Hurlbut resigned Sept. 2 shortly after his third arrest for driving under the influence.
