When it comes to online video, the formula for success isn't all that difficult.
Exploding buildings, cute furry kitties and the outrageous are can't-miss prospects in a world where anything over 30 seconds seems to be a significant demand on viewers' time.
This week's selection on The Fives video review are no different, but they are among the best of the lot. Along the way, there have been a number that are perhaps as entertaining.
The raw video that a surveillance camera caught of an abandoned house exploding in Kentucky kept me enthralled for 23.7 seconds even though its the same footage on a grainy black and white camera of the same event over and over again.
And as much as I wanted, I couldn't pull my eyes away from a follow up report on the psychotic woman who mutilated, killed and cannibalized her newborn earlier this week. It was mostly to see the person who could have done such a thing.
But for this week's video review, I'm sticking to the formula and some of its more basic tenants: fuzzy animals, acts of god and the visually bizarre.
The before and after of Mother Nature's fury
Ever see a tornado form before your eyes? Well, if you haven't, you'll want to check out this video.
The first half shows the funnel cloud forming near Buffalo, N.Y., last Saturday. National Weather Services said the tornado carried wind speeds as 110 mph as it touched in a small town east of Buffalo.
The rest of the video shows the wicked damage the storm did - snapped power lines, downed trees, a whole lot of debris.
By definition, all videos shot about the Sturgis motorcycle rally are at least a little strange. Hundreds of thousands of leatherclad Harley riders are not one sees in their day to day life, even if riding is their life.
Still, this video shot by Journal videographer is unusual by a different standard.
Former Wisconsin State Senator Dave Zien on Tuesday donated his Harley-Davidson to the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. The good senator offered up some words of praise during the dedication, but that isn't the unusual part. Although it might seem a bit incongruous on the surface, religion and the rally have long been bedfellows, albeit somewhat strange.
No, what is really unusual is that Zien had put on a whopping 1 million miles on the highly decorated hog before handing it over to the kind folks at the motorcycle museum.
So, if you aren't able to make it to Sturgis this year for the rally, at least you can see one of the more interesting bikes to make tracks there in 2009.
And there's more to come.
Two heads, two hearts, one baby
Tragic and bizarre all in one swoop, a doctor says 5-day-old conjoined twins with a single body and two heads have died of organ failure in an Indonesian hospital.
The twins had two heads and two hearts, but they shared all other vital organs. And while their highly unusual medical condition made it unlikely they would survive long, their birth brought crowds to the hospital where they were born who were hoping against the odds.
Raw Video: Australian Zoo Unveils Baby Elephant
Four simple words: Cute fuzzy baby elephant. What more does a video need?
The brief video offers glimpses of he first Asian elephant born in an Australian zoo, Luk Chai. Loosely translated in Thai, it means "son."
This short video doesn't fit the standard model of successful video, but I found it fascinating nonetheless.
A brief look at a documentary co-directed by a model stirs up questions about the fashion industry. This video includes a few candid interviews with the young models' experiences and the real life difficulties they face simply trying to get by in the highly competitive world of professional modeling.
