For the second time in the past week, National Weather Service officials in Rapid City have issued an air quality pollution alert for dust for the city west of the Gap.

The alert remains in effect until 5 p.m. Monday.

With winds ranging from 20 mph to 35 mph and gusting to 45 mph, officials say that weather conditions will suspend fine dust in the air over west Rapid City and cause air quality to be poor.

According to a news release from the Rapid City air quality specialist Sheila Hoyer, elderly citizens, young children and people with respiratory problems should avoid excessive physical exertion and minimize outdoor activities.

Although these people are most succeptible to the health issues created by the poor air quality, officials recommend that all people should try to avoid the air conditions.

Voluntary actions to reduce air pollution levels include minimizing manipulation of soils such as construction, industrial or agricultral activities. Also, pollution controls for soil stabilization, porcess equipment, waste pits, stock piles and construction sites suchas as watering and chemical treatments should be increased.
