DEADWOOD - Deadwood city attorney Jason Campbell is moving to a part-time legal counsel for the city after being informed that Uncle Sam wants him full time.
Campbell is a member of the South Dakota National Guard and has been called up to active duty in the Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Army and will be stationed in Rapid City from Aug. 10 to Sept. 30, 2010.
Campbell will be serving 13 months as a backup to a JAG officer who is being deployed to Afghanistan.
Deadwood city commissioners approved the change in Campbell's employment status at Monday's city commission meeting.
"Knowing that he's in the Guard and the situation that they are in the past seven years, it came as no surprise," said Deadwood Mayor Francis Toscana. "He gets to stay close to his family which is good and Jason's job will be available to him when he comes back."
Campbell said he would be available for work on Mondays and Monday night meetings, but would be unavailable the rest of the week. He said if there are city legal needs that are over and above his work schedule, those duties would likely be contracted out.
He will be paid for one-quarter time with no benefits.
