The Oglala Sioux Tribe will hold an honoring celebration Saturday, Jan. 10, for organizers and participants in the 10th annual Fort Robinson Outbreak Spiritual Run.

The run, which starts Friday in Fort Robinson, Neb., and concludes Jan. 14 in Lame Deer, Mont., pays tribute to the Jan. 9, 1879, event when about 130 sick, starving Northern Cheyenne, led by Chief Dull Knife, broke out of their wooden prison barracks in an attempt to return home to Montana. Most were killed, though some found safety among Red Cloud's Lakota. In the end, a small number made it to the Powder River area in Montana.

Saturday's ceremony will be at 3 p.m. in the Red Cloud Administrative Building near Pine Ridge. Chief Oliver Red Cloud will give the welcome address. Tribal President Theresa B. Two Bulls and Vice President William "Shorty" Brewer will also speak, as will Leroy Spang, president of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe.

A dinner will follow at 6 p.m. at the Prairie Wind Casino Lakota Dome near Oglala.

For more information, call Barbara Dull Knife at 454-0769 or Loretta Cook at 867-2876.

On Monday, Jan. 12, the Butte County Historical Society and city of Belle Fourche will co-host a dinner at the AmericInn to honor the runners.

Anyone interested in volunteering to greet the runners or help serve dinner can call Eleanor Marousek at 892-2507.
