After much discussion, a motion for denial which was not seconded, and a second motion to approve the request with changes, Lawrence County Commissioners have given Dan and Barb Moore the green light to run a "Specialty Resort" on their property near Whitewood.

The proposed name of the resort is Acorn Lodge.

The Moores were represented at the meeting by attorney Dwight Gubbrud.

After much discussion and compromise, requests pertaining to the number of units and tents allowed, and access were deleted from the conditional use.

Barb Moore said they are not targeting campers as customers but would like to be able to accommodate those who request it.

"If we have a large wedding or family reunion we want to be able to let them camp."

Attorney Roger Tellinghuisen had appeared at the previous county commission meeting on behalf of neighbors Michael and Kerry Greear. He expressed concerns about the roads capability to sustain the resort. Concerns about parking, impact on wells and the location of leach pads in the area had been voiced but were said to be resolved.

Planning Commissioner Amy Vogt said there was a site exam Friday, July 24.

Kelly Schlecht, a neighbor of the Moores, spoke on behalf of the request. He said when his son returned from serving the military overseas he had 400 people at his home.

"Cars were parked all over my field and no one complained."

"I think it's time for us three neighbors to sit down and have a cup of coffee and discuss this," he said.
