Custer County bans open fires, fireworks

CUSTER - With recent dry conditions, the Custer County Board of Commissioners voted Friday to ban all open fires and fireworks on private and state land, effective Saturday.

Only fireworks approved by the fire department with fire-suppression standby services will be allowed for public safety reasons.

The penalty for having an open fire or setting off fireworks is a maximum fine of $200 and 30 days in jail for each violation. A fine for the cost of fire suppression, if needed, could also be included.

The resolution includes a ban on campfires, warning fires, charcoal-grill fires and the prescribed burning of fence rows, fields, wildlands, trash and debris.

Smoking also is prohibited, unless within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreational site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of flammable materials.
