A federal jury has awarded more than $35,000 to a former National American University employee who sued the school for age discrimination.

Kathy D. Jones, 60, filed suit in U.S. District Court claiming that she was unfairly passed over for the job of campus director of enrollment management. According to the complaint, administrators offered the position to two men, both of them younger and less experienced than Jones, who was then working as an admissions representative at the school. A younger woman was later hired for the director's job.

The jury found that NAU had discriminated against Jones based on her age. According to the judgment filed, the jury awarded her $17,565 in actual damages for lost wages and benefits. The jury also found that NAU had willfully violated the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, which entitled Jones to double that amount of money, for a total of $35,130.
