Tonight's Black Hills Speedway season opener and weekend motocross events fall victim to wet weather

RAPID CITY-Friday night's season-opening auto races at Black Hills Speedway have been called off because of heavy rains received in the area this week.

Bill Keester, BHS track manager, said Friday's races have been rescheduled for Sunday, June 8, weather and track conditions permitting.

Gates will open at noon, with racing scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., Keester said.

In addition, this weekend's series of ABA Bicycle Motocross (BMX) state qualifying races in the Rapid City area and the South Dakota Motocross Association weekend double-header motorcycle motocross on Saturday and Sunday in Sturgis have also fallen victim to the wet weather.

Kevin Kauth of Black Hills BMX said races set for Sunday at the Robbinsdale Park in Rapid City, Friday and Saturday at Box Elder BMX in Box Elder and Sunday at the Hill City BMX park, have been rescheduled for July 12-13.

Kauth said even with the possibility of dry weather forecast for Friday, there was no way to get all three tracks dry enough for races this weekend.

Kauth said an open house and a Race For Life to benefit leukemia research, rained out last weekend at the Robbinsdale BMX park, would also be rescheduled for July 12-13.

South Dakota Motocross Association president Carl Larsen of Custer said a make-up date for the Sturgis motocross has not been determined.
