PIERRE - The Lead-Deadwood School District would get state aid to education to help pay for more than 70 high school students at the Nemo Job Corps under the provisions of a bill approved Thursday by the Senate Education Committee.
Sen. Jerry Apa, R-Lead, pointed out that the school district, which does not qualify for state aid to education, spends about $220,000 educating Job Corps students who come from throughout South Dakota.
Apa emphasized that all of the money would be used for the Job Corps program. "There will be absolutely no money flowing to the school district," he said.
The Lead-Deadwood School District is one of the few districts in the state that does not qualify for state aid because of the ratio of the number of students to the amount of property-tax revenues the district collects.
Now, the bill goes to the full Senate.
