Cameron Humphres was officially named executive director of Rapid City Regional Airport on Tuesday by the airport board.

Humphres, who served as deputy airport director for the past 15 months, takes over from former director Mason Short, who suddenly resigned without explanation Aug. 26 after four years with the airport.

Humphres retired from the Air Force in 2005 after a 20-year career that took him to Arizona, Oklahoma, Texas and Ellsworth Air Force Base. No other candidates were interviewed for the executive director position before Humphres was offered the job by the airport board.

Jennifer Landguth, board president, said the board feels confident about the future of the airport and is happy to have Humphres on board.

Humphres said he was happy to accept the position and looked forward to working with the board on continuing efforts to bring good air service to Rapid City and the region.

"We've got a lot of things happening. It's a very exciting time for the airport, and I'm excited to be involved," he said.

In overseeing the airport's daily operations, he is responsible for the 2,000-acre site, including the 100,000 square-foot terminal and more than 2 million square feet of concrete and asphalt runways and approaches. He also is responsible for 23 full-time employees and a $3.5 million revenue budget.
