Past and present Rapid City mayors will talk progress, prosperity and potholes at a community forum June 5 at National American University.

The event, hosted by NAU and South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, will be at 5 p.m. June 5 in NAU's lecture hall. Mayors will give brief presentations about their time in office and then answer questions.

"City government is the one that's closest to us. It's our streets, our water, our sewers. It touches everything," said John Quinn, campus director of NAU's Rapid City campus. "So what do you as mayor hear about? What really makes people excited?"

So far, Mayor Alan Hanks and former mayors Jim Shaw, Ed McLaughlin, Keith Carlisle and Don Barnett have confirmed they'll be there, Quinn said.

Only former mayor Jerry Munson has not responded. The families of deceased mayors have also been invited.

One area of focus will be the current economic downturn and what should be done to weather the storm, Quinn said. "How will Rapid City continue to grow and thrive, which is what we have always done?"
