Another college student will be honored this spring with an award named after former Rapid City Journal editor Peg Sagen.

Applications are now being accepted for the second Peg Sagen Memorial Scholarship, a $500 scholarship given to a current college sophomore or junior majoring in a field that will prepare him or her for a career in newspaper journalism or online news.

The student must have graduated high school in the Rapid City Journal coverage area, which includes all of western South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming and northwestern Nebraska.

Last year, Brittany Westerberg of Philip, a South Dakota State University student, was awarded the first Sagen scholarship. The print journalism major interned last summer at her hometown newspaper, the Philip Pioneer Review, and has been a staff member of the SDSU Collegian.

"We were thrilled with the quality of the applicants we received last year, given that it was the first year for this scholarship," Journal editor Mikel LeFort said. "Brittany was an outstanding choice as our first recipient, and we're looking forward to more applications from the area's best young journalists this spring."

Application deadline is April 1. Applications are available online at rapidcityjournal.com, by calling Mikel LeFort at 394-8314 or by e-mailing mikel.lefort@rapidcityjournal.com.

Sagen served as editor of the Journal for 11 years. She died of cancer in August 2006.
