Custer celebrates Gold Discovery Days this weekend

Deadwood isn't the only Black Hills community commemorating the 1876 gold rush.

Custer, where it all began, is again hosting Gold Discovery Days events this weekend, July 26 and 27.

Activities include:

Saturday, July 26

6 a.m. 9 a.m. - Lions Club Pancake Breakfast Way Park, Fourth and Mount Rushmore Road.

8 a.m.-4 p.m. - "Shoot for Gold" America Center Road 3-D Archery Shoot. Three miles east and 5 miles northeast of Custer on America Center Road.

8 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Cool Pine Cruisers Car Show, Custer Chamber of Commerce parking lot.

8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. - Custer YMCA Huntin' For Gold 2-Man Scramble Golf Tournament, Rocky Knolls Golf Course, west of Custer on U.S. Highway 16. Tee times 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

9 a.m.-1 p.m. - Seventh annual Custer Mile High Garden Club Judged "Flower" Show, Custer Senior Center, 538 Mount Rushmore Rd.

9 a.m. 6 p.m. - Custer Piecemakers Quilt Show, YMCA, 644 Crook St.

10 a.m.- Gold Discovery Days Parade on Mount Rushmore Road.

10 a.m. 7 p.m. - Arts & Crafts Festival, Way Park, Fourth and Mount Rushmore Road.

11 a.m. - Double Draw Horseshoe Tournament, community horseshoe pit.

11 a.m.- 1 p.m. - Senior Center Sloppy Joe lunch, Custer Senior Center.

Noon-6 p.m. - Old-Fashioned Street Fair (kids activities), Harbach Park, Washington Sreet.

1 p.m. - Volleyball tournament, city volleyball courts, Seventh and Washington.

8 p.m. - Fireman's Ball street dance with Phatt Daddy, courthouse parking lot, Fourth and Washington. Sunday, July 27

5:30 a.m. - Hot air balloons rally on Pageant Hill.

9 a.m. - Gold Rush Fun Run on the Mickelson Trail, Custer Chamber of Commerce office, 615 Washington St.; registration begins at 8 a.m.

8 a.m. - Lions Club horseback poker ride. Register at the buffalo corrals in Custer State Park.

8 a.m.- 4 p.m. - "Shoot for Gold" America Center Road 3-D Archery Shoot. Three miles east and 5 miles northeast of Custer on America Center Road.

10 a.m.- 2 p.m. - Arts & Crafts Festival, Way Park, Fourth and Mount Rushmore Road

2 p.m. - Gold Discovery Days Guns & Gold Giveaway gun raffle drawing, Way Park.

5:30 p.m. - Pig roast at the Frontier Bar, 2 miles west of downtown Custer on the south side of U.S. Highway 16.
