The Black Hills Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is currently assisting people displaced by flooding throughout the area.

Residents affected by the flooding should call 342-4010 for assistance. Also, residents can register their families on the Web site disastersafe.redcross.org, which provides a point of contact for friends and family members who want to ensure that their loved ones are safe and well.

Here is where people can go if they are displaced by the flood:

Box Elder

The Red Cross has opened a shelter at Douglas Middle School, 401 Tower Road in Box Elder. The Salvation Army will be providing food at the shelter.

Belle Fourche

The Belle Fourche Area Community Center, 1111 National St. in Belle Fourche, is set up as a flood evacuation shelter for area residents whose homes are isolated by flood waters over entry streets.

Rapid City

Humane Society of the Black Hills, 1820 East St. Patrick St., is helping families and their pets being evacuated because of flooding. Those who need to temporarily house their pets should call the Humane Society at 394-4170.

How to help

Red Cross: You can assist those impacted by the flooding by donating time and money to the Red Cross Black Hills Area Chapter's Disaster Relief Fund. Call 342-4010, or visit the local chapter at 1221 N. Maple Ave., Rapid City.

To learn more about preparing for a disaster or to donate, go to www.blackhillsredcross.org.

Humane Society: The community is being asked for donations of canned and dry cat and dog food, and bedding, such as blankets and towels. Also, because the shelter hopes to house as many animals as possible, they may need to call people who participate in the shelter's foster program. Anyone interested in applying for the foster program should call the shelter's administrative office at 394-6906.
