STURGIS - The Salvation Army of the Northern Hills got a grand gift Saturday when an anonymous donor dropped a gold coin in its fundraising red kettle at the Pamida store in Sturgis.
Local Salvation Army officer Eric Johnson said this is the third straight year that someone gave a gold coin in Sturgis. Plans are to auction the coin at a later date. Last year, two gold coins brought $2,200 at auction.
Johnson said the Northern Hills Salvation Army bell ringers will be out through Wednesday, trying to raise another $26,000 to reach this year's goal. Mail-in donations will be accepted.
