Man charged with distributing 1 ton of pot

A Rapid City man has been indicted on charges of distributing more than 2,200 pounds of marijuana.

Ryan Lyn Skiff, 23, pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court to charges of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, distribution of a controlled substance and distribution of marijuana to a person younger than 21 years old.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Skiff is accused of distributing the marijuana between October 2007 and March 2008.

The conspiracy charge carries a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison upon conviction, with a maximum of life in prison and a $4 million fine. Distribution carries a maximum penalty of five years upon conviction and a $250,000 fine. Distributing marijuana to a person younger than 21 years old carries a mandatory minimum sentence of one year in prison upon conviction, with a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, according to the news release.

Skiff remains in custody. No trial date has been set.
