Five members of the Iron Pigs arrested after an Aug. 9 shooting at the Loud American Roadhouse bar in Sturgis appeared in a Meade County Courtroom on Tuesday morning and pleaded not guilty to weapons charges.

Scott Lazalde, 38, of Bellingham, Wash., Dennis McCoy, 58, of Seattle, James Rector, 44, of Ferndale, Wash., Erik Pingel, of Aurora, Colo., and Ron Smith of Seattle, all face misdemeanor weapons charges. All are members of the Iron Pigs, a motorcycle group composed of law officers and firemen.

Smith, the off-duty police officer who shot Hells Angels member Joseph Patrick McGuire of Imperial Beach, Calif., during a scuffle, had also previously faced charges of perjury and an alternating count of either aggravated assault or simple assault. However, those charges have been dismissed.

Meanwhile, McGuire, who was hospitalized for about three weeks after the shooting, is charged with alternating counts of aggravated and simple assault.

According to Meade County State's Attorney Jesse Sondreal, the Hells Angels started the fight that led up to the shooting of McGuire.

Sondreal said the five Iron Pig defendants who appeared Tuesday will return to the Meade County Courthouse at 8:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 29, for a status hearing.
