The man accused of fatally stabbing another in Roosevelt Park on July 27 pleaded not guilty during his initial court appearance Tuesday in Seventh Circuit Court.

Kevin Blackbear, 28, remains in custody in lieu of a $300,000 bail bond. Judge A.P. "Pete" Fuller scheduled Blackbear's next court appearance for Sept. 16.

A Pennington County grand jury indictment charges Blackbear with one count of second-degree murder and an alternate count of first-degree manslaughter for the death of Jeremy Kills Straight, 32.

Second-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison. The manslaughter charge has a potential maximum sentence of life in prison.

Blackbear could be convicted of one but not both charges.
