RAPID CITY - Pennington County State's Attorney Glenn Brenner wants the 2009 South Dakota Legislature to pass a tougher law for repeat drunken drivers.
Brenner says penalties should be stiffer when people are found to have very high blood-alcohol levels and have been convicted previously for driving while intoxicated.
He says South Dakota should join states that have aggravated drunken driving laws.
According to the South Dakota Corrections Department, 512 inmates currently are in prison for drunken driving, and nearly half of them are serving time for fourth or fifth offenses.
