With Labor Day approaching, the South Dakota Highway Patrol is stepping up its attempts to stop drunken driving, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
More than 30 sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols will be held throughout the state during the next 15 days, state patrol superintendent Col. Dan Mosteller said.
The crackdown is part of a national campaign: "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest." That program lasts until the end of the month.
More than 11,700 people were arrested for drunken driving in South Dakota last year. A first conviction costs an average of $4,000, according to state officials.
