Former state Rep. Ted Klaudt, convicted Tuesday in Pierre of raping two foster daughters by touching their breasts and genitals in phony examinations, is seeking to cut a deal with prosecutors on a second set of rape charges, his attorney said.
Rapid City attorney Tim Rensch said he doesn't know yet if he'll appeal Klaudt's guilty verdict in Hughes County, but he hopes a second trial can be avoided.
Rensch and Corson County State's Attorney Curtis Hanks have until a hearing on Friday to strike a deal. Otherwise, a trial will begin Tuesday in Deadwood as scheduled, with Klaudt facing charges of rape, sexual exploitation, witness tampering and stalking.
Assistant Attorney General Patricia DeVaney said Thursday she expects that Klaudt will enter a plea during Friday's hearing. She said she cannot discuss the terms of the plea bargain because it has not been completed.
During the first trial, the girls testified that Klaudt promised them they could make tens of thousands of dollars by donating reproductive eggs to infertile couples.
