The arctic cold blast combined with high winds that swept through the Black Hills on Tuesday will merely serve as a precursor to a secondary front that will push wind chills deep into subzero territory and bring as much as a foot to the Northern Hills.
The National Weather Service in Rapid City is forecasting snow beginning in the Northern Hills to begin Thursday afternoon and to last through the night, tapering off Friday afternoon.
While parts of the Northern Hills and foothills received the most precipitation from Tuesday's front, Thursday's storm is expected to be stronger. Accumulations could be up to a foot in the higher elevations of the Hills, with lesser amounts in the foothills and surrounding areas of northwestern South Dakota. In Rapid City, accumulations are expected to be 1-3 inches.
In addition to the precipitation, winds gusting up to 45 mph are expected to accompany the front, creating hazardous road conditions throughout western South Dakota.
