A Martin woman charged with attempted murder has been released from jail pending trial after 7th Circuit Judge A.P. Fuller lowered her bail bond Tuesday.
Krista Richard, 23, is charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder and two alternate counts of aggravated assault in the shooting of Conrad Doyle, 27, also of Martin. The shooting occurred Feb. 8 in Rapid City.
Richard's bond was originally set at $250,000.
Richard's attorney Betsy Harris asked Fuller to reduce the bond because Richard does not have a prior criminal record. She plans to live with her parents in Martin and has two children. Richard also signed a waiver of extradition to assure the judge that she would not flee to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Harris said there are circumstances surrounding the alleged attempted murder that will be presented at trial in Richard's defense.
Fuller lowered the bond to $10,000 after receiving assurances from Richard's parents, Delmar and Wilma Richard, that they will be responsible for their daughter's conduct and appearances at future court dates.
Richard was ordered to have no contact with a list of state witnesses, report for breath tests twice a day, random urinalysis, consume no drugs, alcohol or marijuana, and submit to warrantless searches and seizures.
The bond reduction was made over the objections of Pennington County deputy state's attorney Josh Hendrickson. Hendrickson told Fuller that, given the nature of the charges and because Doyle was shot in the head, the bond should remain at $250,000.
Harris immediately corrected Hendrickson. The victim was not shot in the head, she said.
Contrary to media reports and the states attorney's description of Doyle's injury, the "bullet entered under the jaw and exited at the back of the neck," Harris said. "It's important to be accurate."
