Efforts by officials to develop a historic preservation plan for Pennington County Courthouse will be detailed Tuesday by a consultant hired by the county, according to a news release.

Four Front Design of Rapid City will present early findings from research on potential preservation costs at Tuesday's regular commissioners meeting, which begins at 9 a.m. at the courthouse.

The ongoing efforts began last fall when Pennignton County Commissioners began seeking funding sources to offset the costs of repairs and restoration on the 1922 building. The county then obtained a pair of grants to help pay for a preservation plan. Four Front Design was chosen to do the initial work on the plan that will "guide future restoration and rehabilitation efforts for this historic structure and provide documentation to support future preservation grant applications," according to the release.

Designed by architect W. E. Hulse, the courthouse was built in the Beaux Arts style. It is one of only two Beaux Arts buildings in Rapid City and is one of only a handful of Beaux Arts courthouses throughout the state.

The finalized preservation plan will include historical research, building documentation, condition assessments, recommendations for treatment, prioritization of efforts and recommendations for future action.
