A greased pig and watered down bentonite can even the playing field. When it comes to pig wrestling, it doesn't matter if you are a man, a woman, or even a good athlete.
At least that's what Eric Bonness said after getting a bloody nose from being head-butted by a pig Tuesday night at the Central States Fair.
Bonness' team from Real Life Church won Tuesday night's team pig wrestling competition after wrestling their pig into the bucket in 8.69 seconds.
Each night this week, four teams competed and the winning team from each night will compete in the finals tonight at 6 p.m., with the winning team receiving $1,000 for their nonprofit organization.
This was Bonness' second year competing, and he said it's a lot of fun. His team is playing for Kids Life Outreach.
"Getting out and getting nasty together is kind of fun," he said. "It's unpredictable. That's what makes it fun."
Daryl Lies provides the pigs for the competition and said his favorite part about the event is the "craziness" and the "silliness."
The pigs are greased with vegetable oil, and the ring is filled with watered down bentonite, which is really slick clay. The goal is to get the pig into a plastic bucket, but it has to go in feet first or butt first, and each teammate must have a hand on the pig when it goes in.
Lies said participants are usually surprised at how hard it is to catch the pig. "They are just amazed at how much strength that pig has to actually get away from four people," Lies said.
"It's an unusual form of entertainment you just don't get to see unless you come to an event like the fair."
