Back in December, I decided to take a swing around my trusted friends at eBay to see what kind of South Dakota paraphernalia was out there and what price it comes.
In that little tour around the online auction site, I focused on some oddities and goodies including a buffalo hunt, old school license plates and the rarest of rare currencies.
This time around, I turned it down a notch, looking for some items that might not be soooo expensive but might have some worth - to some people, anyway. Call it the new economy tour of South Dakota goods on the Internet, an eBay extravaganza.
Make millions selling things on eBay
You've seen the advertisements, and I just couldn't quite fathom how people would make that much money. Then I saw South Dakota quarters for sale.
Hey, currency - especially old and rare currency - is big business. If it has an original signature from Seth Bullock on it, or even if it's an old wheat penny or a buffalo nickel, I get it. It's worth something more than it's original asking price.
But if I can simply reach down in my pocket and pull out common currency, is it worth more than face value? Well, apparently so.
What am I bid for this South Dakota quarter? It looks like the asking price is about four times face value. Add in the shipping, and it's a little more than seven times face value. Whodathunk?
Of course, if you're looking to reduce the margin, you've got to buy in bulk. Get a roll of South Dakota quarters, and after shipping, you're only paying about twice as much as face value.
I think I'm getting this eBay thing.
Pocket Daschle - every Dem's dream
This little item might have sold better a few weeks ago, but it's still a keeper for South Dakotans.
The Tom Daschle bobblehead was an anchor on my computer monitor for many years here at the Journal. He stood just a few inches to the left of my President Bush bobblehead.
The great thing about eBay is that even when you might not be getting a deal, it can look like you are. There are four Daschle bobbleheads available right now on eBay. Two sell for a little more than $12, plus shipping. The other two are going for nearly $60.
They must not be following the news.
For those that lean more to the right in South Dakota politics, pickin's a little more slim. The best I could come up with is a vote Republican card featuring Daschle foil Sen. John Thune.
Not nearly as cool as a bobblehead, but funny nonetheless.
Before they were Rush
There's plenty of Rapid City Rush paraphernalia on the team's home page, but if you're looking for game worn, authentic jerseys, the first-year team still has little available.
That isn't necessarily true for all of its players, though.
Since most of the Rush players were on other teams before this season, you can find plenty of hockey cards, programs and other goodies associated with players on this year's team.
The best of the bunch, though, may be this game-worn jersey used by Luke Fritshaw. Going for $425, that price might seem a little steep, but consider this. Some of you have heard me go on more than once about my lone Christmas gift request over the past 15 years - a game worn Tommy Williams hockey jersey. NHL or WHL, I don't care, either would do.
So why haven't I received one. Well, one such jersey did go up for auction on eBay a few years back, but the reserve bid wasn't reached. And it was already at about $10,000.
So how much are those hockey cards again?
Jiggers, it's the cops
A very popular collectible on eBay is patches of law enforcement agencies. More than a dozen are available for said agencies in South Dakota, including the S.D. Highway Patrol, the Rapid City Police Department and the oft-sought after Spearfish Police Department.
But if you're looking for something even cooler (especially if you're under the age of 10), check out these tiny Matchbox-style replicas for a South Dakota Highway Trooper Car and a Deadwood Police Cruiser.
Hey big spenders
OK, so what if you have some real dough to lay down and don't feel like nickel and diming your way around eBay. Have no fear, do I have a deal for you. And you won't have to look far.
Crooked Creek Resort in Hill City can be yours for a little more than $2 million. What do you get?
Dozens of RV hookups, a 14 unit motel, 15 cabins, a gift shop, coin-operated laundry, an arcade on 11 acres of the Black Hills, and it's all set up for Internet access.
