This is part of a series of stories written by the United Way of the Black Hills about its efforts to raise funds for community needs.
It was 7:30 p.m. when the phone rang at the Big Brothers/Big Sisters office. A well-spoken young man told the staff member who answered: "I have been on your waiting list for a year. What in the world is taking so long? I sure could use a big brother right now."
Michael, 10, and his grandmother had been the caregivers for Michael's ailing mother. While they were gone for a brief break from their caregiving roles, Michael's mother died. He planned her entire funeral, from the casket, prayers and songs down to the scent of the candles. He felt it was the last gift he could give her. Now, he was tired of waiting for a Big Brother.
The waiting list is long, and the waiting period is long, as well. However, Michael just happened to be at the top of the list, and a Big Brother was found for him the next day.
Michael hoped for a Big Brother he could walk around with and learn new things from, maybe someone who could help him with his math homework. He now has just such a friend.
United Way dollars help to pay for recruitment for those Bigs who can come into a child's life and fill a void, even if that void is as devastating as the loss or absence of one or both parents.
Please give generously to the United Way campaign. Together, we can make a difference.
