CHADRON, Neb. - The Chadron Public School District is shopping for a new middle school principal.

Lorie Miller will remain with the district but be reassigned, according to school board president Charlie Kuskie.

The Chadron school board met in executive session near the end of June to discuss personnel manners. In the days after the meeting, the middle school principal position was advertised on the Chadron State College career opportunities page. Kuskie said he could not comment on what led to the decision to reassign Miller. The reassignment takes effect with the coming school year. Superintendent Dr. Sherlock Hirning will decide Miller's new position, Kuskie said. As far as he knows, that decision has not yet been made. Dr. Hirning was out of town and unavailable for comment for this article.

The move comes after parents and students filed complaints with the administration and school board near the end of the school year. The issue was given larger attention after about two dozen middle school students staged a peaceful protest before and after school for three days in May. Protest organizers Abby McFee and Brittany Kouba said they believed teachers were subject to policies and administrative decisions that made their jobs unbearable. The girls said they were concerned that several teachers over the past few years had moved or taken early retirement, causing a decline in the quality of education at the school.
