Ellsworth B-1B Lancer bombers at Ellsworth Air Force Base will fly round-the-clock training operations for five days next week.
Ellsworth officials warn that area residents can expect an increase in B-1 flights at all times of the day and night from Monday through Friday, May 11-15.
Although residents will be able to hear the B-1s, crews will not make any unnecessary noise, according to Tech. Sgt. Steven Wilson of the 28th Bomb Wing Public Affairs office.
"Our airmen don't make noise for noise sake," Wilson said.
The 24-hour flying operation is aimed at simulating wartime scenarios, he said.
"We are a no-kidding, all-weather, all-terrain, around-the-clock-capable bomber, limited only by the endurance of the air crew."
Wilson said the exercise is part of routine training conducted throughout the year.
The flights will use five training ranges throughout the Western United States to accomplish objectives that vary from pre-flight coordination to actual weapons use in authorized practice areas, Wilson said.
"This intensive training week gives our aircrew and maintainers valuable, realistic training that will help them provide decisive combat power for global response," Col. Scott Vander Hamm, 28th Bomb Wing commander, said. "Our intent is to provide awareness about this unique training to our neighbors in the community."
Wilson said he did not know how many of the base's 29 B-1s will be flying in the five-day operation. He also said he didn't know if the B-1 damaged in a 2005 accident at Guam would be taking part in the coming training operation. However, that plane is repaired and operational and is assigned to Ellsworth, Wilson said.
