Today we kick off "The Fives," an online column that will focus on best, worst, oddest and the most of almost anything floating around our corner of cyberspace in western South Dakota and beyond.
And not that we're married to it. If given ample persuasion (via Rapid Reply responses, and preferably ones that we can publish.)
After surviving a four-day binge of NCAA basketball and repeated references to Cinderellas and other upset artists, today we focus on upsets - and not necessarily the kind you find on a standard ESPN Top 5 list.
No. 5: A Disturbance on the Mount
A shakeup at Mount Blogmore, the Journal's national-award winning politics blog, hasn't been limited to the lineup only. Former Journal editorial page editor Randy Rasmussen's most recent entry, "The war On President Bush," has set the Mount abuzz with claims and counterclaims about the less-than-popular stance of defending the President, in public. It's garnered comments ranging from "Worst post ever" to "I haven't seen the liberal horde that inhabits the Mount froth at the mouth and go this apoplectic in a long time. Keep up the good work!"
No. 4: Have signatures, will run
Friday afternoon breaking news is sometimes where good stories go to die. Thus was the case with the story about a political candidate who shared little (not even age or experience) but said so much.
The fact that Charles Lyonel Gonyo of Trent is even on the ticket in itself may be an upset. It takes 2,070 valid nominating-petition signatures. But if he could garner enough votes in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate that would register anything north of a Newland for Governor campaign, now that would be an upset. Taking on Sen. Tim Johnson in the November general election … well, at least there would be a distinct choice.
No. 3: A new list for Craigslist
Okay, there isn't anything specific in this story that suggests what level of upset Robert Salisbury is, but the Oregon property owner obviously wasn't pleased when a Craigslist hoax had random visitors taking whatever they wanted from his pad. That could lead to a whole new kind of list: What kind of lawsuits awaits the operators of Craigslist.com.
No. 2: W-R-O-N-G
Paige Kimble, the director for the Scripps National Spelling bee, is taking a beating in the public eye because the organization has refused to recognize some of the nation's top spellers because of screw-ups by local school districts. So far, much of the attention has been focused on Morgan Brown of the North Platte School District north of Kansas City. Although Brown won her district bee, Scripps said the school she goes to failed to register her properly (by district, not by the required school name) and that she won't get to compete. Do I smell an e-mail campaign in the offing.
No. 1: Getting to the point
There's nothing funny about domestic violence, and especially when it happens on Easter Sunday.
Andrea Fay, 32, of Rapid City, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder after she plunged a knife into the skull of John Siers, also of Rapid City. According to reports, when police responded to a domestic distrubance call on Easter morning, they found Siers with the knife sticking straight out of his head. I don't know what led up to the disagreement, but it would be tough topping how upset Fay had to have been to pull off such a deed on the holiest of holy days.
