Only one week remains until the deadline for South Dakota residents to register to vote, and Secretary of State Chris Nelson is asking voters to take the time to register at several registration locations or by downloading registration from from the Internet.

"This is the last week to update your voter registration for the primary election," Nelson said in a news release, noting that voters who want to change their party affiliation or update their registration address also face a May 19 deadline.

Anyone who will be 18 years of age by June 3 or has never registered to vote or someone who has moved and wants to change their address should register. Voters may register at a county auditor's office, city finance office, driver's license station, Department of Human Services offices providing assistance to the disabled, military recruitment offices or public assistance agencies providing food stamps, TANF or WIC. Forms and voter registration information may be downloaded from www.sdsos.gov.

Registration forms obtained from the internet or at these offices may be mailed to your county auditor's office, but mail-in cards must be received by the county auditor by May 19.

In order to vote in the Republican or Democrat primary election voters must be registered with one of those parties. Independents and voters registered with other parties may vote on any non-partisan races which may be on their ballot. Voters can check their sample ballot by viewing the Voter Information Portal at www.sdsos.gov.
