South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds is scheduled to attend an official celebration of the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory at Manuel Brothers Park in Lead on Tuesday.

The National Science Foundation announced it prefers the lab to be placed in Lead on July 10.

On Tuesday, Aug. 28, the city of Lead, Lead Chamber of Commerce and Black Hills Vision will throw a party to celebrate.

The event will feature a free picnic from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by live music by DD and the Fayrohs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Seating will be limited, so attendees are encouraged to bring something to sit on.

The Homestake Collaboration, along with many others who helped make the SUSEL a reality are expected to attend. Among those are Rounds, Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard, U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson, U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, U.S. Sen. John Thune, T. Denny Sanford and honorary citizens of Lead.
