Susan and her sons, ages 3 and 18 months, waited in a long line of people for their turn to apply for a Christmas basket from the Salvation Army. "Hi, I'm Superman, and this is my little brother, Noah!" the eldest greeted Capt. Bethany when they finally reached the front of the line.

Susan's husband was laid off his construction job a few weeks ago, and the family has fallen on hard times. Their vehicle also is in need of repairs; her parents have loaded them their pickup and help as much as they can, but they have limited resources as well.

"If it weren't for the Salvation Army, we wouldn't have a Christmas at all this year," Susan told Bethany. "Thank you so much for everything!"

They will receive a basket of food, including a turkey and gifts for the children.

The Salvation Army is one of several United Way agencies working to help make the holidays brighter for those in need. Donations to the Living United campaign benefits the Salvation Army and other community outreach groups.

"Needs are greater than ever this year," said Black Hills United Way executive director Renee Parker. She said a $60 contribution is enough to sponsor a holiday basket such as the one Susan and her children will receive.
