Polls open at 8 a.m. Tuesday on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation as members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe vote on proposed changes to the tribal constitution.

Nine proposed amendments are on the ballot for today's Secretarial Election. Election officials say the changes include separating tribal court from the tribal council; creating four-year staggered council terms; requiring regular monthly council meetings; clarifying the removal and recall process for elected officials; establishing a Bill of Rights; making changes to the treasurer's position; requiring the tribal council to adopt an ethics code; removing the residency requirement for tribal enrollment; and changing the name of the Oglala Sioux Tribe to either the Oglala Lakota Oyate or the Oglala Lakota Nation.

The polls close at 7 p.m. A spokesman for the election board said he expects results to be available Wednesday morning.
