A Newell area man was arrested Thanksgiving Day at his home after a brief standoff with Butte County sheriff's deputies.
Chief Deputy Gary Brunner said Friday that the man, whom he did not identify, surrendered after less than an hour of phone negotiations with Deputy Doug Parrow.
A caller had notified the sheriff's office about 5 p.m. Thursday that the man had been acting violently throughout the day at his home, a mile south of Newell. No injuries were reported, but the man said he had a rifle and handgun and threatened to defend himself when initially contacted by law enforcement.
The deputies, South Dakota Highway Patrol and state Division of Criminal Investigations responded. After the man surrendered, officers entered the home and confiscated a .22-caliber pistol, a .22-caliber rifle and ammunition.
Brunner said the man faces charges for disorderly conduct and simple assault domestic violence.
